The Barnyard Boys

About the Boys

History:
The Barnyard Boys started around 2004 with Dave Adamson and Jed Malin playing 'Blue Grass' music in Dave's garage. After Dave Bailey joined the band in 2005, they began playing local events. In 2007 the boys were joined by Larry Burkdoll. The summer of 2008 saw the addition of Bobby Simms. The Barnyard Boys are enjoying playing many local events, fairs, and festivals.

Dave Adamson - Dave has played with many local bands over the years, many of which he started. Dave is the Bands main vocalist as well as Mandolin and Banjo player.

Bio:
Hi, my name is David Adamson. I live in Ottawa, Kansas with my wife Jerrie. I want to put a shout out to our kids & thank them for there support; Shane, Shawnda, Jessica, Katie, Jill, Todd, Megan & Brooke.

I was introduced to Bluegrass music by a great friend, Buster Jenkins & his wife Betty. Buster left us in the past year but I feel that the Barnyard Boys would not be here if it wasn’t for him. (Thank you my friend)

My hobbies are music, golf & gardening. I like a good cold beer, my wife’s cooking & being at the lake fishing with my grandkids.

I want to give my gratitude to Jed, Dave, Larry & Bobby for there dedication to this Group. Folks I’m having a blast with four very good friends.

I hope you all can come and see The Barnyard Boys sometime. Give us a holler, shake our hand, and become a friend. D.J.D.L.B. = BYB

Thanks, Dave

Jed Malin - Jed is the heart & soul of the Boys. Jed sings and plays guitar and mandolin.

Bio:
Born and raised on the High Plains of Western Kansas, Jed Malin was blessed to be surrounded by music since birth.  His large farm family produced multiple generations of church choir directors, classically trained pianists, professional voice coaches, nationally acclaimed flautists, rock and roll bassists, fire baton twirlers, fiddle players, trumpeters, opera singers, and champion dairy cow hollerers.

“As a young boy I would awake to Mozart and Stravinsky emanating from the family piano.  My mother, Rita Beth, spent many years leading the church choir and all 4 of my sisters were standouts in high school musicals.”

After years of struggling with self esteem problems and stage fright, Malin finally found his voice in Dave Adamsons’ garage in 2005.  He became a Barnyard Boy.   The rest, as they say, is history……

Malin’s musical influences include Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Jimmie Rogers, Jackson Browne, Paul Simon, Neil Young and Ricky Skaggs.

Dave Bailey - Dave is our musical director. Dave was a 'Rock & Roller' for many years, but found a new love in the Barnyard Boys harmonies and acoustic sound. He sings, is our 'lead' guitar player, and keeps us on the straight and narrow.

Bio:

My name is Bailey, Dave Bailey. I live in Ottawa.
Been playing guitar with Larry since 1972. He was in my first band and we're still together. I have three kids Matt, Adam and Kasie. Been married 126 years, I mean 26 years to a great gal - Shari. Got lucky there. I really really enjoy GOLF, I’m a 7 HC, and like to talk smack when I play.

Things I like – golf, steak, N.Y. Jetts, hot weather, music, #*^!@$#ing and yard work.

Things I hate - cold weather, when my kids cars break down, K.C. Chiefs, bad golf, cold coffee and wet toilet paper.

Will be having my 50th birthday in December, boy that’s great. I'm having a lot of fun with these guys playing music. Its not about the money its about the fun. My e-mail is

Larry Burkdoll - Larry join the Boys in 2007. He comes from a Rock & Roll background, but once he started playing the Barnyard Boys brand of down home good time music, he has never looked back. Larry plays Bass guitar and sings some too.

Bio:

Hello everyone, I’m Larry.

I’ve been a Barnyard Boy for a while now, and I’m learning a lot about the Barnyard…  I’ve got to tell you there is just nothing quite like the smell of fresh cow patties in the morning. Smells like victory, or something…

I live in the country near Princeton. I have a son in college. He’s my pride and joy and becoming a pretty good little guitar player.

If you’ve read Dave Baileys Bio, you know that we have been playing music together forever. Dave is the guy that talked me into joining the Barnyard boys, and I’m glad he did. Dave has been my best friend since the 4th grade. We’ve done a lot together over the years.

I’m very fortunate to be able to play music with these guys, they are all great musicians, and really good guys. Traveling around with them is just a blast. We truly love playing and entertaining people – be it on stage or around a fire, or on a friend’s deck. (Thanks Bloomer…) This is by far the most fun I’ve ever had playing music.

Oh ya… I like: Skinny skiing, hot tubs, a cold beer, and “Real” women. (Bi%#@y, nagging, self absorbed women, without a sense of humor, need not apply)

I dislike: Pushy and conceited people, and the women described in ( ) above.

Write to us and let us know you’re out there… thanks for stopping by…

Bobby Simms - Bobby is the latest member of the band. Bobby has traveled far & wide, and played with many great musicians. Bobby sings, plays piano, banjo & harmonica.

Bio:

Hi Folks,

My name is Bobby Simms. I am the newest member of the Boys, joining up in the summer of 2008. I am from Pomona, via Ottawa and Rantoul. I’ve lived in Franklin County my entire life. I attended Central Heights in elementary school, graduated from Ottawa High School and attended Ottawa University. I started playing the piano at the age of 7 under the instruction of Darrell McCune. I just recently learned how to play the harmonica and banjo. When Dave Bailey and Larry Burkdoll started their first band, I was only 6 yrs. old!! So I am the “pup” in the band.

In the 1990’s I was in the quartet, Showdown, and then sang with my little brother for a couple of years. I was also in a gospel quartet based out of Ft. Smith, Arkansas for a while, before joining up with the Bubba Hyde Band until 2008.

I am married to a beautiful woman named Tonya. She is my best friend and has been for 24 years now. At the early ages of 19 and 18, we got married and decided to start our family. We now have four children, a daughter and three sons. Jaime is our oldest, she is 20 and a sophomore at Ottawa University. Justin is 18 and he’s a senior at West Franklin High School. Josh and Marcus are both 15 and are sophomores at West Franklin High School. My job takes me to places I never thought I would go and spending quality time with my family when I am home is a top priority.

We enjoy hanging out at the kids’ activities and spending time in our yard when the weather permits.

Things I like: Football (can’t get enough), Country/Bluegrass Music (when it’s good), cold beer, spending time with my friends and family, and alone time with my wife (rare as it may be).

Things I dislike: Not getting to spend enough alone time with my wife, rap music, bad country/bluegrass music, any kind of car trouble, poorly played football games, (ie, chiefs), and days over 100 degrees!!!

Things I really dislike: Ego’s (no, not the waffles), serious people (lighten up for Gods sake), and little yipping dogs!!! (Bark like a real dog, or shut the hell up already!)

This is the most fun I have ever had playing music and it shows. I am looking forward to what the Barnyard Boys have down the road. Every time out is an experience. And like Dave Bailey says, it’s not about the money, and that’s a damn good thing!
